10 Things You Need To Know Before Getting a Cat

Your Mentality: Getting a pet or a cat can sound lucrative or cute. But it is not. I have watched countless pet owners who get a pet on a whim, but when they get a cat home, they cannot take care of the pet properly. That is why you need to do proper research before getting a cat. You need to ask yourself if you really can take care of the cat.
Patience: Patience is the most important thing when you adopt or buy a cat, but for some reason, I do not find anyone talking about it. When a cat is first brought up in a new environment, it is scared and tries to hide in various places. So as an owner, you must make sure that you keep your patience and give the cat time to make itself comfortable in the new environment. With time, as it makes itself familiar with the environment, it itself will start playing around. As an owner, you do not need to force the cat to play with you. Keep it as natural as you can.
Health Checkup: When you are about to bring a cat home, it is very important to do its full health checkups because it is important to know if the cat has any kinds of disease or not. In cat adoption homes, often the cat health checkups are ignored, and necessary care for the cats is not taken. So getting a health checkup before getting a cat is mandatory.
Vaccination: If you are adopting a cat from the road or any other public place, then you can assume that the cat or kitten has not gotten any kind of vaccination. But if you are buying or getting a cat from an adoption center, then it is very important to get the cat's vaccination card. After you bring the cat home, you need to consult with a vet to see if there are any existing vaccines that need to be given to the cat. If the vet says that any kinds of vaccines need to be given, you must make sure the cat gets them; if not, then the cat can get various kinds of diseases.
Food Habits: Cats are very peculiar about their foods. If you suddenly change their food habits, they will not be able to adjust to the sudden changes. So when you are bringing the cat home, you need to make sure you know the food habits of the cat. After you bring the cat home, at least for the first few days, you need to continue with the food habits that it had before. Later, gradually, you can change the food habits of the cats according to your comfort and the cat's nutrition, but make sure it is not sudden.
Litter Box: Before you bring a cat home, you need to find a place where you want to keep the litter box. This step is a must. You must make sure the litter box is in place before you take a cat home. It is easier to train the cats when they are younger. If you do not train them in their early days, it will be tough for you later to change their habits.
Necessary Equipment: Before you bring a cat home, it is very important to get few of the necessary equipments for the cats like toys, combs, brushes, nail trimmers, etc. Brushes and combs are very important for their grooming, and these things keep them healthy and energetic. Cats like to play with toys. Toys will help you connect more with them, and their exercise will also be done through this.
Their own space: Before getting a cat, you need to make sure that you allocate a place in your home that the cat calls its own. What I mean by that is that this place will be the primary location for the cat, they will sleep there, they will be most comfortable there, and the place will be soaked with their scent. It is very necessary to do so, especially when they are first brought, as they are frightened and will look for places to hide. Places as such will make themselves comfortable and less scared.
Cat proofing: Cats are naturally very curious. They like to explore and chew things. So it is very important for you to cat proof your house. You need to make sure the wires in the house are not opened. Plug holes are not wide open, and windows are not big enough for the cats to pass and get on the road. Along with that, we have a tendency to put plants in our homes. Make sure those plants are not accessible to cats because they will chew them, and sometimes those plants can be poisonous to the cats.
Scratcher Post: A scratcher post is also recommended for the new cats. Cats naturally like to crawl and get into things. If you do not have a scratcher post, cats may scratch the couches, relaxing chairs, or other things that can be scratched.
We hope we have not scared you off. But even if you have been scared off a bit, I can assure you that having a cat or cats in your home is a blessing. They will fill your house with joy and happiness. You will love every second you spend with your cat. You will become happier, healthier, and more energetic.
