Adopt, Don't Shop: The Advantages of Pet Adoption

Advantages of Pet Adoption

Last Updated on 19 May 2024, Care Kitties

We all want to have a pet in our house that we love and care for. When we want to have a pet, we have two options. The first one is adoption; the second is buying a pet. Both have their own pros and cons. But if you ask any cat owner who has been a cat owner for quite a while now, most of the owners will always reply that one should adopt rather than buy. But why? In this article, we will try to find out the Advantages of pet adoption.

Better Support Is The First Advantages Of Pet Adoptions:

When we buy a pet from a pet store or an owner, they are running a business, and they think of the pet as a product that they want to sell. They won’t give you the kind of support you desire after they are sold. That makes sense because, as a profit organization, their purpose is to conduct business. However, if you take in a pet from an animal shelter, they will stand by you. If you have owned a pet in the past, you will be aware that the first two or three months are difficult for both you and the pet to adjust to. Shelter frequently supplies that first bit of support since the individuals in charge of the shelter are passionate animal lovers. Along with that, animal shelters have connections with vets and pet clinics. So you can easily connect with the vet and get an understanding of the pet’s health without worrying about finding a trustworthy vet.

Saving Life Is Another Advantages of Pet Adoptions:

I do not know if you know this, but many shelter houses have to euthanize animals because there are room constraints and various other reasons. According to new data, all U.S. shelters would be no-kill if 6% more people chose to adopt rather than buy pets. So by adopting, you are not just helping a pet but saving the life of another too. And from my experience, I have understood that when we adopt pets, people nearby also get affected by it, and they also start to adopt pets. Even those who do not love pets. So by adopting a pet, you can start a chain, and eventually, you will not even know how many animal lives you have impacted. So see it as an opportunity to save many lives.

Fighting against greedy or vicious pet mills:

There are various pet mills and shops that do not care about the pet or their health. They just see it as a product to sell. They follow various inhumane and unethical practices that cannot be described in words. Though everyone is not the same, most of them unfortunately are. There are approximately 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S. As you can see, only the US has so many where rules and regulations are so strict, and you can imagine how many there are in the world where rules and regulations towards animals are not so strong. So when you buy from them, you are supporting them unconsciously. Adopting rather than buying from those mills will mean that you are doing the bare minimum against those inhumane practices.

Trained cats:

As mentioned above, people running the animal shelters are mostly trained and know how to deal with pets. As a result, when you adopt a cat, you will most likely find that the pet is well-trained. You do not need to spend hours to litter train or food train it. As it is already trained, your primary responsibility will be to make it adapt to the new situation. On the other hand, buying a pet from a pet store does not often guarantee that. As a result, you will need to spend a good chunk of your time training it.

Making a pet’s life better again:

Many pets in animal shelters were house pets before. They also had a good life. But one day the owners, for whatever reason, left them at an animal shelter. Because they cannot speak, we assume they cannot have mental problems. But most of the pets, after being left out, go through mental problems, especially dogs. When you bring that pet to your house, you are making its life better again. Those pets may take more time than usual to get adjusted to you or to trust you again, and that is understandable. But if those pets get adjusted to the new environment, they will shower you with more love than any other pet in the world.

Cost-effective:

Adoption will save you a lot. Usually, buying a pet costs you a lot, ranging from $500 to $2,000. This cost gets cut automatically when you adopt. Not only that, when you go to a vet for health reasons like spaying, neutering, or vaccines, the vet or clinic will give you a good amount of discounts because of the reason that you have adopted the pet. And this discount will not be provided if the cat is bought. Just like this, in many other scenarios, you can save money if you adopt rather than buy.

Understanding the pet’s personality:

Like us humans, every pet is different. They come up with their personalities, behaviors, and preferences. If you buy a cat from a pet shop, it is quite possible they do not know that much about the pet. But when adopting from a shelter house, the caretakers will likely know a lot about the pet’s personalities, behaviors, and preferences, which will help you a lot to gel with the pet better and faster.

These are a few reasons why adopting is better than buying. But there are many more benefits of adoption, writing which will make this article much longer. So we will just stop here.

Hope adopting a pet will fill your house with love, and happiness!!
