Why You Need to Spay Your Cat?

Spaying is a special kind of surgery that veterinarians do on female animals like dogs, cats, and rabbits. It makes sure these animals can't have babies. If you have a female cat and are confused about whether to spay your cat or not, then this article will help you understand why spaying your cat is very important.

Let me start the article with one of my personal experiences. Our first adopted cat named “Choco” had several heat cycles but she did not breed nor she became pregnant. As a result of that, suddenly one day we found that she was showing some unusual behaviour. Looking closely we found that some liquid was leaking across her uterine walls. It was a very tense night for us as could not do anything and also it was also past midnight so no vets were to be found. But somehow we passed the night and when we took her to the vet the next day we found that she had a disease called Pyometra which is an infection in the uterus (womb) of a female cat. Consulting more with the vet we found that the main reason she faced this fatal disease was that she went through multiple heat cycles without being pregnant. The vets also mentioned that if we were late by another two or three days, she could have been dead. We did the surgery for pyometra in emergency and spayed her right away.

I believe this story has helped you to understand the importance of Spaying. Now let us look at some of more benefits of spaying:

Increased Life Expectancy: Research shows that cats who have been spayed have a higher life expectancy than cats who have not been spayed. A study conducted by Banfield Pet Hospitals looked at a database of 2.2 million dogs and 460,000 cats. It found that female dogs who had undergone spaying lived 23% longer than male dogs who had undergone neutering. The study found that neutered male cats lived 62% longer and spayed female cats lived 39% longer. You want your pets to live longer, right? So spay it.

Better Behavior: If you have already had a female cat who has gone through one or multiple heat cycles, then you know how the cats struggle at such times. They roam, bark excessively, roll onto the floor, yowl, and show some very unpleasant behaviours. These behaviours are tough to handle, and you and your family members face a lot of problems due to them. Spaying your cat will make your cat behave better. They will be less likely to bark, roam, yowl, roll, and show aggressive behaviours.

Better Health: As I mentioned, the disease named "Pyometra" is just one of the diseases the cats can have without spaying. Without spaying, female cats can have life threatening diseases like uterine infections, uterine cancers, and many more. Spaying your cat will reduce the chances of such diseases and make your cat a healthy one.

Cost-effective: When my cat had pyometra, the overall cost I paid for it was four times higher than the actual cost of spaying your cat. Similarly, any kind of disease will also cost much more than spaying. Also, if the cat becomes pregnant and conceives a kitten, the cost of raising the baby will also be much higher.

Removes the risk of pregnancy Spaying removes the risk of pregnancy and unwanted pregnancies. If your cat goes outside, it is quite possible the cat will get pregnant if they are in their heat. Unwanted pregnancies bring lots of problems for you and your cats. Spaying is a very good solution for unwanted pregnancies.

Eliminating Heat cycles: As mentioned above, when the cats get into heat, they show some very aggressive behaviours, such as moans, yowls, and rolling to the floor. Spaying will eliminate the heat cycles for the cats.

Overall, spaying is very beneficial for your cat and improves its health and energy.

Note*: Spaying is a very sensitive issue and requires an expert's opinion. Therefore, before spaying your cat, you need to consult with your vet to find out the complications of spaying and if the cat is suitable for spaying.
