Heat in female cats means that the female cat is ready to be fertile and become pregnant (which can be compared to periods in women). Heat cycles in female cats can start when they are 4 months old if they are not spayed, and these cycles can reappear in 2–3 weeks. There are various symptoms to determine if your cat is in heat. If you are a new cat owner, look at the symptoms below to find out if your cat is in heat or not. It is not necessary that a cat show all the symptoms mentioned below.

Attention: A female cat in heat often seeks much more attention than normal. They rub up against furniture, chairs, doorways, and humans to spray their scent on the things. The reason they do that is because if any male cat goes past these things, it can understand that there is a female cat that is ready to mate.

Calling: When a female cat is in heat, it will yowl, moan, and even meow in an unusual way. This process is called “calling.” This way, the cat is letting any male cat nearby know that she is in heat and ready to mate. You may also notice a change of voice and tone when she is in heat.

Restlessness: When your cat is in heat, it will be restless. You will rarely find it properly sitting in a place. It will be restless. It will continue calling or rolling into the floor continuously. She will continue these processes until she is not in heat anymore.

Mating posture: When your cat is in heat, you will find her shaping her body in a very special posture called “Lordosis.” In this position, she will lower her neck while raising her buttocks. It is rare to find a cat in such a position without heat multiple times a day. So this is a very good sign to  This position makes mating easy for the male cats, and that is why the female cats often shape their bodies in that position. Look at the photo below for a better understanding.

Excessive Licking: When the female cats are in heat, they feel uncomfortable in their genitals. The genitals become red and swollen. As a result of that, they lick and groom the area excessively. You need to be careful with the genitals at this time. If you see something very unusual, contact your vet immediately.

Less appetite: when your cat is in heat, it will most likely stop eating or eat very little. In such circumstances, do not force her to eat. Losing an appetite in heat is a very normal thing, and there is no need to worry about that.

Roaming around male cats: If you have a male cat in your home when your female cat is in heat, then you have a very tough job in your hands if you do not want them to mate. The cats will try to use every opportunity to mate. In such cases, you will have to keep them apart if you do not want the cat to get pregnant.

Trying to go outside: If you do not have a male cat at home, the female cat will try to go outside in search of a male cat to mate with. You will need to make sure you block every possible way so that the cat cannot go outside. If the cat manages to go outside, it is very possible she will become pregnant. So you will need to be very careful about this.

When your cat is in heat, make sure to take care of it properly. As mentioned above, the heat cycle can be compared to the menstrual cycle in women. So if you are a woman, you know how tough it is. So take extra care of the cat and try to make it as comfortable as you can.

Remember, these cycles can be stopped by spaying the cat. Want to know the benefits of spaying the cat? Read this article of ours: Benefits of Spaying your cat.
