Understanding Cat Behavior: Do They Know When They Misbehave? Last Updated on 22 Jan 2025, Care Kitties As cat owners we wonder …
7 things you must do after bringing your cat
home
Connect with a Vet: The first thing you need to do after getting your cat home is to connect with a vet. Getting a health checkup right after getting a cat is very important. It will help you to understand if the cat has any kinds of diseases or not or if the cat needs any kind of treatment. This point becomes even more important if you have other cats at home. If the cat has any kind of flu or parasite, that can be transmitted to other cats of yours. Moreover, connecting and making relationships with a vet is very important because, from time to time, you will face various cat problems, especially if you are a new cat owner. So in those times, you will need vets in an emergency.
Keeping them separated from other cats or pets for the first few weeks: Cats love their routine very much. So when they are suddenly shifted to a new place, they will be scared and may attack other cats or pets. So give them the time to settle in, and then gradually mix them with other cats and pets if you already have any.
Start Grooming Early: As you know, cats like to groom themselves on a regular basis. They are one of the cleanest animals out there. But even so, it is very important to brush them once a day and do their nail trimmings once in a while. Some cats can be very naughty and chaotic while doing so. That is why you need to make sure you start the process of grooming early and make it a routine for the cats.
Start Training Early: Start training them as early as you can. If you have already named your cat, make sure you start calling them by their name, not anything else. Similarly, if you want to train the cat to do something, start the training as soon as you can. If you delay the process, it is quite possible you cannot properly train your cats.
Cat proofing: Cats like to explore things. You have to be careful if you bring your first cat home. For example, when you open a wardrobe, cats may get into it, and they will hide there. So when you open your wardrobes, closets, or any other things, most of the time you will find the cat wants to go inside there. So make sure you check before closing your wardrobes or closets. Along with that, sockets, and plugs should be properly handled. Also, if your house is near the road, keep a good eye on the cats so that they cannot go out of the house through the doors or windows.
Try different litter and foods: Cats are peculiar with their foods and preferences. So it is important to know that the foods and litter you bought may not be accepted by your cat. So try different kinds of foods and litters before getting knowledge about their preferences.
Get cat collars or any other identification accessories: The world is not a very good place for animals. Though with time people are being more generous to the animals, it is still not perfectly safe. So, if you let your cats go out of your house, make sure you put on a collar or any other accessories that will identify the cat as a home cat. If you do so, people will know this is a home cat, and hopefully they will not show any harmful actions towards the cat.
From my personal experience, I can tell you that cats are a blessing. If you already brought a cat home, then big CONGRATULATIONS to you. I can already tell, you are moving forward in a very happy and energetic environment.
